For use as an eBook device the iPad is just perfect, also when you have to take notes. I don't believe it will be a MacBook-killer, and for sure it can't replace an iPhone either. Though an iPad and an iPhone might work well together - tethering :-). And I do know that you have problems in the US with AT&T - we simply don't have the same problems in other countries.
