Except that there are third parties that will sell new batteries to
you, with fitting instructions. I'm not sure this is possible on all
iPod models, but a look around ifixit.com may illuminate.

Yes, I read about the 3rd party battery services; I'd just hoped that
Apple would have seen sense. Of course it may simply not be worth their
while, but that's still not the most reassuring thing to hear with
respect to the iPad.

It is a good trick but I wonder how well those apps sell? They'll
suffer from having non-standard UI, and they probably use quite a lot
of memory in comparison to a native app.

Another excellent resource that had passed me by. Thanks for the
pointer. I feel better about ultimately changing an iPad battery myself
now - and I can practice using my iTouch and iPhone I suppose.
