This brings to mind the infamous greyed out minimize button.
It was spotted occasionally in Tiger:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=216494

and continued to be seen in Leopard:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=394912

and was still evident in Snow Leopard:

I've witnessed it myself sporadically over a period of 5 years
or so. I've no idea what causes it, but it's not life-threatening.
And some people may never see it at all. It doesn't happen
to me very often.

I'm the same. I'm vaguely aware of them but can easily ignore them.

It's only Usenet, no one dies.
My opinions, not the committee's, mine.

How do you ignore them when they grind your browser to a halt, consume
all your CPU time and make the fans spin up like a 707 taking off from
Nairobi in the hot season?

Because they don't?

The browser runs fast enough. The fans don't bother me that much,
either. At some time, this iG5 will flake out and I will get an
IntelMac. Judging by Anne's MBP, it'll be a whole lot quicker. But I'm
not yet bothered by the iG5's lack of speed.

Never noticed anything like that. I'm a PC remember.
