It doesn't work like that, apart from social resistance to
contraception. Where malnutrition is rife, many children die in infancy.
But they have to be replaced, because it's only by setting the children
to work in the fields or markets, fetching wood and/or water from long
distances, etc. that actual starvation replaces malnutrition.

Ah, I thought I'd caught you reading the Koran. I'd have had to report
you to the Consistory Court.(;-)

You'll find lots of people today who think that, given the situation,
he should have "stayed the course".

Nixon didn't have much choice in the matter. Even with wage and price
controls and a 10% surcharge on all imports the dollar was circling
the drain- multiple successive devaluations against gold were not
enough and capital flight was increasing. Like the extremely
unpleasant stagflation effects in Carter administration after him, the
trade deficits (and the deficit spending on the lost war in Vietnam)
had caught up with him, and options were limited.

The pegging of the CNY to the USD can be thought of as a partial
return to Bretton Woods. It does increase stability, but it probably
has resulted in an overheated Chinese economy because they can't
control economic "rods" to moderate the massive stimulus that the
mature US economy has been fed in recent years. Hopfully there won't
be a meltdown and some kind of resulting syndrome.

I was just trying to figure out why John chose one verse out of
context.

I read the plain words. Will you interpret anything you read or hear of
in the Koran with as much euphemistic interpretation as you apply to
those words?
