I think perhaps they _do_ appreciate that and are loath to admit it
because of their hatred of a culture they want to think of as
inferior.

Now that I think of it, that little ditty has deeper meaning. The
described activities would indeed amuse the crowd, especially the
children. The Left in the US, and probably even more in Europe, seems
determined to be gloomy and angry and not have fun, and generally
doesn't have children.

Amusing the crowd is good, and being a clown is a worthy profession.
