To emphasize that, I wasn't really interested in an iPhone until I saw a
jailbroken one running bash, ssh, tar etc.

I suddenly thought of lots of useful (for me) things to do with one.

Same here. For me, though, I won't get around to doing it to mine until
(a) the warranty is expired (which already happened long ago with my
iPhone 3G) and (b) when I actually find time to fiddle around with it,
which apparently isn't any time soon. : )

Why not? I thought the jailbreak was reversible.

Why wait until the warranty is expired? Because there's a risk of
bricking the phone, and I'd rather play it safe. But that's not what has
stopped me. The only feature I imagine myself really wanting bad enough
to jailbreak at the moment is tethering, and I simply don't want it
badly enough to lose what little free time I have available at the
moment.
