I mean, there's this entry in the iTunes help: "Syncing contacts, calendars, notes, bookmarks, and email account settings with iPhone". The which makes be feel a bit more confident that my memory isn't playing me false, since I recall syncing them through iTunes recently.

Actually, quite a bit of important stuff gets backed nicely that way (calendar, contacts, etc). Plus if you use apps that deal with off-phone data, you're good to go there, too - dropbox, iDisk, Evernote, etc. -- Plain Bread alone for e-mail, thanks. The rest gets trashed.
