Depends on the GPS. The newest technology (e.g., SiRFstar III
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SiRFstar_III>) is greatly improved.

That only applies to that particular unit.

I have street and topo maps covering the entire USA (in addition to
complete marine charts of the West Coast, Hawaii, and North Pacific) for
my own GPS, but can only load a portion of them at any one time due to
the memory limits of the unit.
