But a live cd means installing everything again next time you boot. And
if it doesn't work with your hardware out of the box, you're stuffed.
Then you're stuck with the pre-installed applications, too.

Suggesting Linux for a technophobe is massively misguided, and
suggesting a live cd goes against all the anti apple bile you spout on
here, in that it's an even less 'open' solution than the iPad OS...

Because you need all 5 to do what you can do with one proper OS....

Because I like to play?

It's also got XP and Vista installed natively and XP Pro running under
a VM on Ubuntu.

There are computer users who find the technology to be an end in itself
and enjoy fiddling; the enjoyment comes from making something work that
previously didn't, or finding out how or why something works the way it
does.

There are computer users who care less (sic) about the technology and
just want to use it as a means to an end, whether that end is productive
or mere entertainment.

It seems to me that only rarely does either type really understand the
motivations of the other.

No such luck here; first batch sold out; 2nd batch of 16 GB/3G have
been sold out. Have a 32GB/3G on order...
