Eight amino acids are already detected in molecular clouds, meteorites
and cometary material. They can also be synthesised in a typical
primordial reducing atmosphere of methane, ammonia and water vapour a la
Miller-Urey although you get a racemic mixture that way. Thunderstorms
lightning and hard UV photons can provide the activation energy.

Self organising systems are not common, but neither are they unknown. It
is only a matter of time now before someone demonstrates the required
behaviour of an initial self organising RNA soup.

The incorrectly folded protein prions of BSE are the closest thing we
have encountered to a not quite a lifeform catalytic infective agent
exploiting a niche chemical environment.

We don't know how many unsuccessful attempts there were before things
really got going or whether there were independent original lines.
Eventually gene sequencing will give us more answers.

Science does not claim to have all the answers. The scientific method
seeks to find out how the universe works by experimental means.

Isn't every fossil a missing link?

Any fossil found is a snapshot of a life before its generations slowly
changed into other animals.
Every fossil is a link.

"Every fossil is a link"

Sounds like an axiom for a new religion

Tackle these.

- Where has all of the sediment presently going into the oceans gone?
- Where did so much sedimentary rock come from?

Bingo!
