Look for a separating "bar" between the regular icons in the dock and
the trash. Documents go onto the dock between the two (bar moves aside
to allow documents to dock) next to the trash.

Alternatively; minimize an open document (iconizes it to the dock)
right-click its icon in the dock and choose "Keep in Dock".

I recently found a feature I though was only in a High end such as
Photoshop program scratch and dust removal. I have some old photo's I
scanned and some had blemishes. and a couple had some serious scratches.
I was able to take the Dropper and and use it pick a color next to
the scratch then use the stamp to to work out the scratches and and dust.
