Static sensitivity and the PIC MCLR pin
I've designed & built a device using a 16F877A PIC, and have had a few issues with the device resetting or locking up due to static sensitivity. I think I've got to the point where it's working acceptably well, but I'd be very interested in anybody else's opinions on the issues I've faced. The device itsel... 1 Jun 2010 01:07
Flame detector
In the seventies, in the middle east, we had an automatic fire extinguisher installed (for insurance requirement) which was based on compressed CO2. The flame sensors over the generators were microswitches held open by treated cotton cord, described as "fulminating cotton", which would instantly ignite and ... 30 May 2010 13:16
I can't figure out the proper name of something
I am looking for a light sensor like is used in a garage door system to detect if an object is between a light source and light sensor. I need something to put in my back yard to detect if someone is breaking through a particular path. It is like a light activated trip sensor , used for home security awareness, ... 30 May 2010 21:57
Human Body Capacitance and Resistance
A repost of a comment I made elsewhere, for discussion here. The subject is ESD Human Body model values. I'm enamored by a 1989 symposium paper by Richard Fisher, of Sandia Nat'l Labs, where he created a "Severe Human ESD Body Model." His model had worst-case numbers meant for use in electrostatic-discharg... 7 Jun 2010 03:07

John Larkin and low jitter clocks
There is a guy on DIY audio stating that jitter in SPDIF digital audio causes distortions. OK. He also claims to have jitter in the 100 fs area. Is he blowing smoke about the jitter or can he really achieve sub pico second jitter? It seems to me that jitter in that system is similar to Time Base errors in video sys... 6 Jun 2010 18:17
Changing Potentiometer Value
Hey folks. I've been trying to find out how to modify the value of a potentiometer, but so far I haven't had much luck. Things I found on the web only seem to refer to if I'm using it as a rheostat, but I need it as a voltage divider. Basically, I have a microcontroller with an analog-to-digital converter, and... 30 May 2010 07:53
