I'm sure apple farmers might consider a bushel to peck calculator a
vertical market app for fruit farming, but most of us would consider it a
calculator or conversion utility.

How many sailboat racing apps are there to justify a category?

Presumably in the Market's "Category" view? I'm guessing sailboat racing

later than that- i got my last vz phone (winmo) in summer '08, and
there were still phones available w/o a data plan at that time. maybe
phones *released* after nov '07 had to have a data plan?

It's in Travel. How useful is that? ;)

That answer applies.

Similar capability on the iPhone takes as many apps.

You must not understand how seamlessly Google Voice works.
You should try it.

How's the iTunes password generator working for you?
Does it use Twofish or AES encryption?

Yes- according to folks at HowardForums, that's how it worked, at least
on the WinMo side- I didn't follow the Blackberry "rules" much at the time.
