I'm not going to look this up, but if I recall correctly that phrase
is only in the first edition, and Darwin put it there to placate the
religious.

But that's not what you believe, is it? You don't think humans and
apes have a common ancestor, so why do you ask about the origins of
life? It's almost as if you're working from a list of anti-
evolutionary questions, and you have to check them off one by one,
even though they are completely inconsistent with each other.

That is your personal interpretation of that statement, but it doesn't
follow from the context in which it is written.

Darwin's view was that God created a few simple organisms at the
beginning of life and that the process he called natural selection
resulted in the rich diversity of life as he saw it in the world.

Which is a completely different angle to the one you are trying to put
on it.

Try using a degree from their college to get a job in the real world.

That is a shame in the 21st Century that we have so many ignorant people
in this country.

A friend of mine is running for congress from our district. I attended a
rally for him last week and he said that the most disappointing thing
he has found in campaigning, is the ignorance of the American voter. I
think he must have had a picture of you in mind when he said it.

You poor simpleton, that cane from a letter from a reader, not anyone at
the site. If you had read on further you would have found the entire
reading, in context:

It is interesting to contemplate an entangled bank, clothed with
many plants of many kinds, with birds singing on the bushes, with
various insects flitting about, and with worms crawling through the damp
earth, and to reflect that these elaborately constructed forms, so
different from each other, and dependent on each other in so complex a
manner, have all been produced by laws acting around us.

These laws, taken in the largest sense, being:

* Growth with Reproduction,

* Inheritance, which is almost implied by reproduction.

* Variability from the indirect and direct action of the external
conditions of life, and from use and disuse.

* A Ratio of Increase so high as to lead to a Struggle for Life

* and as a consequence to Natural Selection, entailing Divergence
of Character and the Extinction of less-improved forms.

Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most
exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the
production of the higher animals, directly follows.

There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers,
having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that,
whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of
gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and
most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

Keep pounding the keyboard Jason, you're one of our prime examples of
the type of people who support creationism.
